Psalm 51 -- Track 6

The Story

I wrote this song early in the morning on May 13, 2011. The night before I had been comparing the Linda Ronstadt and the Michael Nesmith versions of the song "Different Drum," listening to both repeatedly. The country twang of the Nesmith version stuck in my head as I went to sleep, and I woke up with it still playing there, along with the words "a clean heart create for me oh God." I proceeded to compose the melody, and then sat with Psalm 51 open in front of me, and found it all working itself into place.

The Lyrics

A clean heart create for me Oh God

A clean heart create for me Oh God

A clean heart create for me Oh God

Put a steadfast spirit deep inside of me

Give me again the joy of your help

Rescue me, my God, You alone are my helper

Sustain in me the fervor of my soul

A clean heart create for me Oh God

A clean heart create for me Oh God

A clean heart create for me Oh God

Make me hear rejoicing and gladness; Revive all that was crushed

From my sin turn away your face

In sacrifice you take no delight; What you want is my humbled heart

A broken, humbled heart you will not spurn

A clean heart create for me Oh God

A clean heart create for me Oh God

A clean heart create for me Oh God

My offenses I know them

My sin is always before me

In your sight it’s evil I have done

And it don’t matter what no one else thinks

When in your sight I’ve sinned

Wash me Lord, wash me ‘til I’m clean

A clean heart create for me Oh God

A clean heart create for me Oh God

A clean heart create for me Oh God

When you purify me I will be truly clean

You rebuilt the brokenness in me

You open my mouth

And out comes my song of praise

And you will be pleased with this sacrifice

A clean heart create for me Oh God

A clean heart create for me Oh God

A clean heart create for me Oh God

A clean heart create for me Oh God

A clean heart create for me Oh God

A clean heart create for me Oh God
