Deliberate -- Track 5
The Story
"Deliberate" was the last song recorded for this album, and I wrote it on October 26, 2011, when most of the recording was already done. A musician-friend of mine, Br. Neven Pesa, had proposed a song writing challenge to me, in which I agreed to write one entirely new song every week according to his specifications. After a few weeks of writing guitar songs, he challenged me to write for keyboard instead, despite the fact that I don't play the keyboard. And it wasn't just the skill hurdle I had to clear; there was also a formidable emotional hurdle involved. The keyboard I have belonged to my late father, who was also a musician. To sit down and seriously set myself to write music, from the depths of my soul (from whence all my music comes) on his keyboard required the very firm act of will that the song talks about. It took a deliberate decision: I will face this difficulty And why? Because I knew it wasn't just Br. Neven who was challenging me. Musicians don't fall into my life by accident. I knew this was a Divine Appointment. When I completed this song, I was delighted. And when another song I had planned to include on the album just wasn't shaping up the way I wanted it to, I decided to replace it with this song instead.
The Lyrics
Can you tell me what you do to crack an egg
Do you tap-tap-tap that thing just a little bit
Oh no, no, no
But you can’t lose control
You can’t smash it with your fist
You gotta make the break deliberate
Uh huh huh
Make the break deliberate
Uh huh huh
Make the break deliberate
Make the break deliberate
Now you see I’ve got a heart that’s like an egg
What it holds down deep inside I gotta give if I will live
Oh yeah yeah yeah
Why do I resist the hand that comes to bring me life
(chorus)
I trust you
I trust You
I trust You
So in my life I choose to lay it all on the line
I will die with you so that my heart can truly live
Uh yeah yeah yeah
Taken blessed broken given now to feed a hungry world
chorus
